Birsa Munda Vidyapeetha, Town High School emerge champions

Birsa Munda Vidyapeetha (BMV), Rourkela and Town High school, Sundargarh would represent Orissa in the All India Nehru Hockey Championship, which is scheduled to begin held at Shivaji Stadium, Delhi on October 10. BMV would be playing in under-17 girls` and u-17 junior boys` groups, while Town High School would compete in u-15 sub-junior boys` category. These two teams qualified for the all-India event by virtue of winning the state level Nehru hockey tournament, which took place here at Sports Hostel ground, Panposh from September 25 to 27.

The u-17 girls` final match, Birsa Munda Vidyapeetha routed Town High School 10-0. Left-winger Birajini Ekka accounted for six goals including a hat-trick, Swayamsudha Sahoo scored three goals and Sasmita Barla sounded the board once. With this victory BMV girls booked their ticket for 18th All-India Nehru Girls` Hockey Championship (U-17) to be played in Delhi from October 10 to 19.

Town High School sub-junior boys` team avenged the defeat of their girls’ team by inflicting a 5-2 defeat on Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth. For the winners, Teophil Kuzur and Prashant Tirkey scored a brace each after Neelam Sanjeev Xess drew first blood in the second minute. Sandeep Kerketta and Suman Kuzur scored the two consolation goals for the Birsa Munda team. Town High School would play in the 29th All-India Nehru Boys` (U-15) Hockey Championship to be played from October 19 to 30.

In the junior boys (U-17) section, Birsa Munda Vidyapeeth registered a convincing 6-0 victory over Town High School. Amardeep Ekka struck twice, while Sumit Topo, Biraj Topno, Sylvanus Barla and Sudhir Ekka contributed one goal each for the winners. BM Vidyapeetha would participate in the 40th All-India Nehru Boys` (U-17) Hockey Championship to be held from October 30 to November 14.
